Best DIY Halloween Costume Ideas to Make With Used Clothing
Halloween is a time where you can dress up and be whoever or whatever you want to be! How fun is that? However, I’m sure you can agree about the downside of this holiday—the money part! Why do costumes have to be so dang expensive? We’ve got a solution! Create a DIY costume from used clothing!
Trust us, your costume will come out awesome, if not even cooler than what you’d pay for one from a Halloween costume shop. Plus, all of those costumes are made from fake materials and hardly ever have much uniqueness to them. Spending $70 for a piece of plastic that’s going to look like everyone else’s? No thanks!
Here’s some DIY costume ideas you can craft up with used clothing from your favorite thrift store.
Where’s Waldo
Find a striped red shirt, khaki pants and a red beanie and you’re good to go. All of these items can be found at your favorite second hand clothing store. Just make sure you give yourself enough time because there’s not always a guarantee you’ll find a striped shirt!
Hippie/Flower Child
You know you’ve always wanted to embrace your inner hippie. Used clothing is perfect for this costume. Grab a flowy skirt, a crochet shirt and tuck a flower in your hair. Boom! You’ve just been transported back to the 70s. Groovy man!
80s
Ok, here’s the plan for this costume. Walk into your favorite second hand clothing store and scout out all of the bright colored clothing. Immediately flock towards anything neon. If it has a crazy print on it, even better! Layer items and make this costume your very own!
Nerd
This is a classic costume! This one is great for when you are really running behind on time. Find a plaid skirt, or shorts/pants, some suspenders or a bow tie and a white button up shirt. Pair that outfit with a pair of glasses and put your hair in pigtails or slick it back with gel. Stuff some pens and pencils in your pocket along with some tape around the center of your glasses as the finishing touches. That took you about 10 minutes to put together AND the entire costume is made from used clothing.
Doctor
Second hand clothing stores are a great place to find scrubs. This is a great group costume idea. Have all of your friends or family dress up in scrubs and be the crew from the TV show ‘Scrubbs.’ You’ll be warm and super comfy all night!
Cowgirl/Cowboy
Yeehaw cowboy! Saddle up and ride on down to your local second hand store. The items you’ll need are a pair of Wranglers or Daisy Duke type shorts, flannel shirt, belt buckle and some boots. Oops, don’t forget the cowboy hat—that will really make the outfit and let people know that you’re country to the bone, at least for the night.
