The College Student’s Guide to Shopping at Second Hand Stores

college dorm room second hand storesAs a savvy college student, you’ve probably tried shopping at a thrift store, or “thrifting.” You may have even consigned your furniture or engaged in a ferocious bidding war on eBay. For the fashion-focused college girl or that hard to please college boy, second hand shopping is an amazing way to fill your dorm with great clothes and furniture without emptying the bank.

While some people make second hand shopping out to be totally grungy, it doesn’t have to be that way! More than half of my home furnishings and a lot of what you’ll find in my closet are purchased from a thrift store. My closet consists mainly of brands like Miss Me, Rock Revival, The North Face and it doesn’t stop there. I have the most beautiful glassware and antiques and all of it purchased at second hand stores.

If you’re interested in shopping second hand but don’t know where to start, I’ve put together a handy guide that’ll get you that designer look in no time! Why Shop Second Hand?

  • It’s cheaper. I’ve bought items second hand for more than 90% off of their original prices (sometimes the tags are still attached!)
  • It’s eco-friendly. By purchasing second hand clothing, you’re recycling in the most stylish way possible.
  • It’s a great source of inspiration! Sometimes I’ll spot a vintage or totally unique garment at a thrift store that I might never have thought to try on at a normal retail store.

What to Buy Second Hand

Luggage

Luggage can be so pricey at retail stores. Buying luggage gently used can save you money to spend while on vacation or that weekend getaway.

Compact Coffee Pot

Small coffee pots pop up at thrift stores all the time. You can find really good brands like Mr. Coffee or Krups.

Eating Utensils

2 Forks 2 Spoons and 2 Knives is just the right amount for a college student. Not a lot to keep track of and not much to get rid of when you’re ready to move on. At most thrift stores these are only .10 to .25 cents each. You can’t beat that.

Extra Sheets

You always want to have a spare sheet set. Buying bedding second hand is so much cheaper. Remember to always wash second hand bedding in super hot water before use.

Apartment sized vacuum

Vacuums can be so expensive in retail stores, where they tend to be one of the best bargains you can find at a second hand store. As a college student, it may not get much use, but when parents come to visit, it’s handy to have for those fast clean ups.

Storage Bins

Small storage bins can be used under the bed or in the closet to store unused items. Second hand stores are overrun with storage bins. Many people donate their goods in storage bins instead of boxes and the second hand store will pass that savings on to you. When purchasing storage bins start by looking second hand first.

Dorm Room-Friendly Furniture

Shopping for these unique size pieces of furniture can get really tricky and expensive. Try your local thrift shop before looking anywhere else. It might have just what you’re looking for or if you don’t have a clue what style you want, it can surely provide you with ideas.

Bicycle

A bicycle is a necessity in some circumstances and a really good source of transportation for around campus and for commuting in a college town. You can find decently priced fixer uppers second hand all the time, or nearly new bikes that have been left behind by those who have graduated to “cars” and their new careers in a new area.

Take Time to Explore

As a college student you might want to explore second hand stores or yard sales in your new neighborhood or close to the college. This can be an interesting way to spend some weekend time while away at school and a great lesson in adventure shopping.

So get those creative thoughts about room furnishings, accessories, and clothing flowing. You may find that you’ll not only save money, but will have a room and fashion sense that expresses a unique sense of style and comfort. You, your parents, and your budget will all be happier.

Try not to procrastinate and remember to check with your dorm mate before going shopping at second hand stores, so you don’t double up on items.
