Thrift Store Tips: How to Upcycle Wall Art

thrift_store_tipsThrift stores are full of old wall art that has been donated by people who no longer want it or think it’s outdated or junk. However, the saying is definitely true; “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure,” because some of these wall art pieces you can find are amazing and can be made even more “hip” and artsy by adding your own creative flare. Plus, it’s a cheap way to add design to your home! Keep reading for tips for upcycling wall art.

Easiest revamping technique:

Paint the frame

If you are afraid to create a masterpiece of your own or don’t like getting too creative, this is a quick fix to upcycle wall art you find at a thrift store. Repainting the frame can give the photo or piece of art an instant lift! Just remove the frame from the art work, or cover the canvas part and spray paint the frame.

If you like to get creative:

Add your own flair to the piece

There is an artist who became famous by simply adding in a touch of his own art to wall art that he would find at thrift stores. He created quirky pieces where he would add his own characters, such as a giant octopus into a painting of people in their village.

Take this whichever way you want! It’s your chance to get creative and really create a conversation starter piece for when you have guests over.

Cut out and add other art

You can even cut up other artwork and combine the two. Or, you can use images from magazines, comic books, books, etc. This is almost like decoupaging.

Repaint/change the colors

Don’t like the color scheme in the painting, or maybe you just want to liven it up a bit? No problem! Just paint over your thrift store art piece by tracing the image with different colored paint. Or, you can splatter paint, add glitter or paint designs (think modern art) onto the piece of art.

Add words

This one is my favorite! Plus, it works on practically any type of artwork that you find. Paint over the top of the artwork with a word, phrase or quote. You can find these in top design stores and boutiques with a high dollar price, but for you it will be a cheap little DIY project!
