Free Books for Kids

Brenda Easter, ARC Store Manager

Brenda Easter, ARC Store Manager

“Both our ARC Stores receive boxes of books donated every day from the community,” says Brenda Easter, Chico ARC Store manager, “Sometimes more then we can handle. As a grandmother, I thought why not share them with the children in town and hopefully spark a love of reading.”

From 1983 to 1999, over 10 million Americans reached the 12th grade without having learned to read at a basic level. In the same period, over 6 million Americans dropped out of high school (U.S. Dept of Education, 1999).

The Chico ARC Store distributed approx 900 vouchers to the Chico Boys & Girls Club and the Chico Country Day School. During the month of April any child, grades K thru 8, who brings an ARC Store Book Voucher to the Chico ARC Store, 2020 Park Ave., will receive one free children’s book of their choice. books graphix

Learning New Skills For Fun & Profit

ARC’s Adult Day Program provides many of our special needs clients the opportunity for paid work training in both our Oroville and Chico ARC Stores.

During their ARC Store shifts the ADP clients learn social skills, customer service, counting money and what it takes to run a business.  Some of our clients have true entrepreneurial spirit. Like Maryann..

“The ARC’s Adult Day Program has taught me a lot of different things like how to learn a different language like Spanish, be social and friendly with peers and how to start selling my handmade pot holders.” shares Maryann.

Maryann Rodriguez lives with her grandmother. She loves to make pot holders, work on word search puzzles and watch her favorite movie star Hannah Montana on T.V.

One of Maryann’s peers at the ARC, Erin (who also happens to sell her hand knit scarves in the Oroville ARC Store), noticed her interest in wanting to learn how to hand make pot holders and decided to teach her. Maryann’s pot holders reflect all the hard work that she puts into them.

Maryann looks forward for all the things that the future offers. She would like to learn how to run a business and how she could earn money through her hard work.

Your purchase of one of Maryann’s handmade potholders (Only $5) will help Maryann realize her goal. Thank you.

E-Waste Anyone?

EWaste Question GuyWhat are you suppose to do with that annoying old computer collecting dust in the garage or that funky VCR hiding in the back of the closet?

You know they have toxic chemicals that must be recycled and disposed of  properly or you risk polluting our soil and ground water but exactly how do you dispose of it all??

Well, you bring it to the ARC Store! Of course!!

The ARC Store in cooperation with WTP will be hosting an “E-Waste Drop Off” Day Sat, Feb 20th from 9am to 1pm.

“Basically, we’ll accept anything with a plug.” Assures Brenda Easter, ARC Store manager. Bring all your obsolete electronics and we’ll dispose of it all in accordance with State Regulations. We’ll take your CRT’s (TV’s, monitors, laptops), all universal waste like radios, VCR’s, keyboards, cell phones and more will be accepted.

We will be accepting E-Waste at both our ARC Stores!

Saving Money & the Planet

Shopping at thrift stores is so fun!

I went to Reno over the weekend… had fun in the casinos, dined at a fancy restaurant, took in a show… and did some thrift store shopping! Yes, you heard me right, thrift store shopping. And it turned out to be a good gamble, too, because I found a cute little red dress perfect for Valentine’s Day for a buck. A buck! It was like hitting the jackpot.

Thrift stores are like money saving, planet saving treasure hunts. You never know what you’re going to find but you can bet it won’t hurt your budget. Plus you’re keeping it out of the local landfill. Guilt free, green shopping.

ManagersSpecials compressedAt the ARC Store in Chico and Oroville we have “Daily Manager Specials” that will make your dollar go even further.

Pop in every once in a while when you’re feeling lucky and I’ll bet you’ll find a treasure.

Missed the book sale?? Really?

Did you miss the MASSIVE Book Sale in the ARC Pavilion last weekend?

Really?? Ah well, not to worry we still have plenty of books, movies and music in both the ARC Stores…. and Jennifer, Chico associate extraordinaire, will be happy to help you.
