6 Fun Ways to Save Money This Valentine’s Day
Many people would like to celebrate Valentine’s Day, but honestly just can’t afford it, or they don’t like the fact that it is such a commercial holiday making trillions of dollars for candy makers and florists. But hey, what are you going to do, ask your sweetie to be your valentine without something to hand them? Probably not. There are many creative and fun ways to celebrate the sentiment of Valentine’s Day and save money in the process. Let’s examine just a few of them.
1. Love Notes
Leading up to Valentine’s Day, literally shower your sweetie with heart shaped Post-it® notes in his/her lunch container, on their coffee mug in the mornings, in the shower or on their computer. Let these be love notes and profess your undying love, how beautiful or handsome your partner is, kind of like pillow talk without the pillow. Cost? Only $4 for a package of Post-it® notes.

2. DIY Valentine Stay-At-Home Night
Surprise your Valentine when he or she asks you, “What shall we do for Valentine’s Day?” and just answer, “I don’t know, we’ll figure it out, I may have to work late.” Of course, this answer would never do, so plan ahead. Search the shelves of a second hand store where there are tons of romantic comedies or drama movies to choose from and start buying the ingredients for their favorite meal ahead of time.
Prepare the meal together or let your honey watch you cook it with the best ingredient: love. Pair it with a glass of your favorite beverage served in a wine glass and toast to Love.
What’s a movie without popcorn and candy? When you break out the bag of unbuttered popcorn, sprinkle it with pink sugar, cinnamon and add some cake decorating sprinkles already in the pantry. Who knew finding ways to save money for a night at home could rekindle romance and make you a superhero?
3. Valentine’s Day Love Sticks that Give All Year Round
Stumped for a unique, but affordable gift for your Valentine? Use a mason jar or other drink sized jar found at your neighborhood second hand store and a package of Popsicle sticks, red and pink markers and curly ribbon and you’re good to go! Put a ribbon around the mason jar, and write a special treat for your partner on each stick with a colorful marker. For example, “back rub in candlelight;” “washing and detailing the car;” “make your favorite dinner,” etc. You know your Valentine better than anyone, what sorts of things would they want without having to ask? Make enough that they can redeem a Popsicle stick every month, every week, however often you feel willing.
4. Mother Nature Calling All Lovers
Go for a sunset walk holding hands and take a selfie to memorialize the moment, frame it and make it the first of many “Valentine selfies” to come. Take a blanket with you and once the stars come out, pick a comfy spot, lay down with your honey and stargaze. See if you can find a heart or flowers in the sky made from stars.
5. How Many Ways Do I Love You? Deal Me In
Want a brilliant idea for an inexpensive gift that will keep on giving? Surely you have a deck of cards hanging around, perhaps even a deck from a cruise ship you and your honey traveled on, or a deck you regularly play with. Punch one or two holes on the same side, put colored ribbon through the holes. Write all 52 ways you love him or her (one way on each card). Your Valentine will treasure it! Or buy two decks, maybe one red and one blue, sit down together and create the Deck of Love for each other. It’s also a great way to spend an evening, counting the ways you love him or her.

6. Hunk a Hunk of Burning Love
Are you looking to create an especially personal Valentine gift for the love of your life? Yes a night out is great to create a memory, but give the gift that keeps on giving and one that will definitely keep the flame from going out. Make a playlist of both of your favorite songs so you both can play it in the car and think of each other while you’re apart. This idea and several more can be found here.
Who says you’re not a romantic?! If you weren’t before now, you certainly will be after all these ideas and ways to save money. To purchase any of the items you might need remember to visit second hand stores like the Arc Store for decks of cards, blankets, popcorn makers, movies, or dishes.
