8 Money Saving Tips for Back to School Kids’ Clothing
After the summer fun has ended, it will be time to start thinking about the large sum of cash most of us have to shell out for back to school clothing. One way you can save money is to start shopping now. Here are some money saving tips for saving yourself from the empty wallet later.
1. Shop end of season spring and summer sales
Some warmer weather clothing can be converted into cooler weather clothing. For instance, a stylish tee can be worn over a long sleeve shirt, and skirts can be worn with leggings. Buying 1 outfit that can be worn in multiple seasons will save you money. Rather than buying 2 or 3 outfits for each season.
2. Don’t snub thrift store shopping
You can find many gently used brand name clothing items at thrift stores like the Arc Stores and Salvation Army. Some items may still have the original tags. Some common brands you’ll see are Old Navy, Gap, Children’s Place, and Gymboree.
3. Hold a clothing swap
This can be easily organized at your local church or in your school parking lot with friends or a mom’s group. Agree that clothes must be in good condition, no holes, stains or rips. You could even make it bigger and opt to trade shoes, backpacks, unused school supplies and more!
4. Browse Craigslist or the newspaper for people selling children’s clothing
This usually happens in “Lots” (aka “One Lot of Girl’s clothes size 7/8 $X.XX). This can be an excellent way to save money and gather some inexpensive clothes. Most of the time the sellers post pictures of the clothing so you have an idea beforehand. Rather than inviting someone into your home, meet in public places and make sure to go with someone else so you are never alone. Sometimes there are even unwanted clothes in the lot that you can resale to make the money back you spent.
5. Hit up garage/yard sales
Just be sure to look through the clothing well and check that the pieces are free from damage. Also, wash anything you get from a garage sale just as you would from a thrift store before handing it off to your child. Many times, garage sale clothes sit in attics or basements for months or even years before the sale. You even expand on these money saving tips by learning some bartering techniques.
6. Make something old something new again
Turn a pair of jeans that are “so last season” into something in style by adding patches and stitching. Turn a dark solid T-shirt into a new top by using a bleach pen to draw designs on it. You can even find last season clothing items at a thrift store to practice on first.
7. Focus on buying basics
By adding in a few extra trendy pieces and accessories, you can make your outfits go twice as far. You can find a wide selection of basic tees and tanks at the Arc Stores.
8. Buy small pieces of your wardrobe over time
Then you won’t have to spend that money all at once later. Things like buying socks and underwear early will save you money when it comes time for bigger expenses.
No matter which of these money saving tips you choose to put into practice, make sure to always read descriptions well, check for stains, holes or tears, and be aware of who you are meeting and where. Get great deals and often free clothing in excellent used or new condition just by taking the time to shop around or use your creativity.
