How to Make Your DIY Scarecrow Costume with Used Clothing
Somehow, summer is already over, fall is picking up steam, and it’s time to talk about Halloween. It’s hard to believe that we’re already discussing costumes, but ladies and gents, the time has arrived for costume planning. While we know you’ll always have a cat headband and probably some little devil horns in your closet as a backup plan, it’s always good to have some creative juices flowing. We have compiled a creative DIY scarecrow costume made from used clothing that is sure to get your juices flowing.
Makeup
Start checking second hand stores in mid-September for Halloween makeup. Many people buy too much and end up donating the unopened packages that you can purchase at a discounted price.
Using your orange makeup, let’s start with the nose, cheeks, and lips. Take your orange Halloween makeup and fill in a round circle on each of your cheeks, then draw a triangle on the tip of your nose. The last thing to do with the orange is to fill in your lips like you’re putting on lipstick.
Now give yourself a bit of a smokey-eye look. Take your eyeliner and draw on your fake eyelashes. (Gluing on fake eyelashes is optional, but it will add fullness to your eyes). Next outline your nose. Simply outline the orange triangle on your nose with a thin black line, then add small lines making your nose look like it’s stitched on. Add the stitch look to your cheeks too, starting at the corner of your mouth continuing to about the middle of your cheek.
Clothing
Used clothing is great when compiling your Halloween costume, because after you alter it to look like a scarecrow, you’re most likely not going to wear it for anything else. Begin by finding a plaid button up shirt. If you’re planning on being a scary scarecrow, you may want to rip up the shirt so it looks ragged. A fall colored plaid shirt would be a nice touch.
Next, find a pair of skinny jeans or even a pair of denim overalls. Finding jeans with distressed rips will add to the detail in the costume. You can always make your own rips if your new “old jeans” don’t have any. If you choose used clothing you won’t feel guilty putting rips and holes in your jeans.
The right footwear will continue to create the country “scarecrow” look. Light colored boots would look great. If you’re comfortable with a small heel then definitely rock the heel. If you’re going to wear a cuffed pair of jeans, short topped boots would probably look best. The Arc Stores generally have both gently used and also obviously well-worn boots at great prices.
Finally, adding a big floppy hat to your costume is a necessity. Big summer hats can be found in the discount summer section due to the fact that they are not in season anymore. Used clothing stores usually have these items year around.
Final Touches
Adding a few pieces of straw to the cuffs of your boots or the top of your overalls gives your scarecrow look the winning details.
If you’re going to be a girl scarecrow putting your hair in 2 braids is a great touch, with maybe some cute bows at the end.
Adding rope to your middle section as a belt is another idea.
Now that your creative juices are flowing with a great scarecrow costume, let’s get dressed up. Trying to find some of these items at used clothing stores beforehand will save you money on your costume, giving you extra money to spend on candy!
